Health officials in Sydney say a drug that treats erectile dysfunction could raise the risk of a heart attack.
The most common side effects of Viagra and Cialis are headaches, indigestion, back pain, and indigestion-like pains.
The new study, published online Tuesday in the New England Journal of Medicine, shows the drugs can raise that risk, though the researchers say that could be much higher than previously thought.
Dr David Koyama, a clinical cardiologist at Sydney’s Royal Free Hospital, said his team was confident it would increase the risk, but noted that there was a “need to explore this further” and that they did not have much experience in treating patients with ED.
Viagra’s maker, Pfizer, has been making a number of similar drugs since Cialis came onto the market in 2003, and they have been widely available since then.
“It’s very important that patients see a treatment plan that’s consistent with their current health,” Dr Koyama said.
“We’ve seen some patients in recent years who are at risk of experiencing side effects when they are taking these drugs.”
He added that doctors should be aware that some patients might have a slightly increased risk of heart problems in the future because of the increased risk of side effects.
A study published in May by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania found that Viagra lowered blood pressure by more than 20 per cent among men who had used the drug for at least three months. Cialis lowered the blood pressure by more than five per cent.
Cialis and Viagra were prescribed in Australia by doctors, but some men have used them for recreational purposes as well.
But Dr Koyama said there was some evidence that Viagra may cause a side effect in some men, but that it was not a serious risk.
“We know that some men with ED will have a small number of side effects, but there is no evidence that the risk of these problems is very high in this group,” he said.
“We have patients who have used a number of different medications,” Dr Koyama said.
“The only time that they have been able to get a new medication is with the approval of a health authority.”
Viagra, which is sold under the brand name Levitra, is not a magic bullet to bring down the cost of men with ED. Pfizer, which makes Levitra and Cialis, will make generic versions of the two medications in the next few months.
For now, Dr Koyama said his team was confident that it would increase the risk of a heart attack, but he added that further studies to see if they could increase the risk, even with no increased heart attack risk.
“If there is a risk of a heart attack, and if there is a risk of a heart attack of that nature, we would still be at a higher risk of a heart attack,” he said.
“There has been an increase in patients being treated with the drugs,” Dr Koyama said.
“If they are having a heart attack and there is an increased risk of that, then that is a very high risk of a heart attack.”
Dr Koyama said some men with ED might also have a lower return on their medication because Viagra was not approved until 2003.
“If a man has erectile dysfunction and is going to get a new prescription, it is important to talk to his doctor and get a prescription,” he said.
In Australia, Viagra is known as the “blue pill,” with people taking it for a range of conditions. It’s also used as a recreational drug in some sports, including football and tennis.
The drug is sold under the brand name Levitra, which is sold as Cialis.
Dr Koyama said he did not see a specific increase in a particular patient’s risk of heart problems with Viagra.
